Abstract

Odontogenic myxoma is the third most common benign odontogenic neoplasm, characterized by stellate and fusiform cells dispersed in an abundant myxoid extracellular matrix. It has a higher prevalence between the second and fourth decades of life, with a predominance of the female sex. The purpose of this study is to present a case of an odontogenic myxoma in the maxilla in which different imaging tools were used for surgical resolution. This is a 39-year-old woman, who sought care in the maxillofacial surgery service of the Hospital General del Oeste “Dr. José Gregorio Hernández”. The patient had a slight increase in volume accompanied by moderate intensity pain in the left middle third of the face. In the cone beam tomography, a heterogeneous image was seen that occupied the entire anatomy of the left maxilla, isodense in the majority of the image with some hyperdense foci inside, invading the nasal fossa and displacing the orbital floor, which allowed planning and performing biopsy to establish the diagnosis. Based on the histopathological diagnosis of odontogenic myxoma, it was determined to perform a left hemimaxylectomy and two-stage reconstruction, also planned based on the imaging studies that were essential for the resolution of the case.
