Abstract

Osteochondroma is one of the most common benign bone tumors in the axial bones; however, it is rarely found in the craniofacial region, half of the cases or more are located in the coronoid process and the mandibular head. The purpose of this article is to present a osteochondroma case in the mandibular head, diagnosed by computed tomography and subsequently treated by condylectomy. This is a 50-year-old patient, who requested care in the maxillofacial surgery service at the Hospital General del Oeste “Dr. José Gregorio Hernández”. During the evaluation, the patient reported pain in the left temporomandibular joint for several months, associated with limitation of mouth opening. Computed tomography revealed an increase on the left mandibular head dimensions and changes in its morphology compared to the contralateral one. Based on the presumptive diagnosis of osteochondroma, a left condylectomy will be performed in consideration of the patient’s symptoms and signs. Six months after the intervention, the patient does not present any symptoms and enjoys optimal mouth opening. The tomographic findings in this case were decisive in guiding surgical treatment.
